ABOUT US

The Sun Prairie Community Band is a volunteer organization providing free performances in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and communities in the area.  We are a concert band of 40-50 musicians, playing everything from traditional and contemporary concert band music, to marches, show tunes, jazz, and holiday music.

Our members include professional musicians, students, and others who enjoy playing.  There are no auditions, so if you play or used to play, we encourage you to come join us.

OUR DIRECTOR

Sherry Jenkel has been leading the band as Director since 2010. She is a general music teacher at Greenland Elementary School and Nature Hill Intermediate School. Sherry graduated from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with a degree in instrumental and general music education.

In addition to directing the Sun Prairie Community Band, Sherry performs as a flutist with the Madison Wind Ensemble.

OUR HISTORY

The history of the band in Sun Prairie dates all the way back to 1876, as the “Sun Prairie Cornet Band”.  The band has evolved and existed in many forms through the years to present day.  The City of Sun Prairie website provides more details about the history of the band, including a publication by Barbara A. Murray titled “Sun Prairie Community Bands: A Definitive Historical View 1876”.  This publication includes historic photos, biographies of previous directors, old concert programs, and much more.
